Please do a paragraph about this post with this instruction . post most have 4 or more sentences . you also have to have a high quality post from a content perspective. This means it also needs to do more than agree with or praise a class mate. If you agree with a classmate, explain why, give an example, share what you learned in the readings
Extraneous variables are undesirable variables that are encountered in a research and are known to influence the relationship between the variables under study (Grove, Gray & Burns, 2015). These variables are existent in all studies and can be a barrier to having a clear understanding of the relationships between variables.
There are two main variables used in an experiment. They are:
Independent variable: is the variable that is changed or controlled in an experiment to test its effectiveness on the dependent variable.
Dependent variable: is the variable that is being tested and measured in the experiment.
The researcher decreases or eliminates extraneous variables by controlling the extraneous variables. “Controlling involves imposing of rules by researchers to decrease the possibility of error, thereby increasing the probability that the study’s findings are an accurate reflection of reality†(Grove, Gray & Burns, 2015, p. 36.). Studies conducted without control on extraneous variables will show a correlation between the independent and dependent variable that doesn’t truly exist without the intervention of a present extraneous variable. For example, a researcher is conducting a study on the effects of stimulants on patients that have attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). First of all, to conduct this research, the researcher has to control extraneous variables by selecting a particular age group, time, place, environment, type and dosage of medication. If the study is not controlled, the researcher will not get accurate results due to varying age group/gender, medication type and dosage, place and environment. Controlling extraneous variables enables researchers to determine the effects of an intervention or treatment on study outcomes more accurately (Grove, Gray & Burns, 2015).
