Look at the chapter on the Spartans at Acanthus and Melos (pp. 97-109). How does the Spartan commander Brasidas explain his situation to the people at Acanthus? Why does Brasidas bring up the ideas of “force” and “fraud”(p. 99), and what does he mean by these? Do you believe, as Brasidas says, it is possible to give people freedom “against their will” (p. 99)? Cite specific passages.
